My 63 Chevy

Hello there, I am Bob Mayben, I live in Gadsden Alabama, and I love old cars.  Since 1962 and my first 54 Ford Crestline with a very noisy (my friend Vic Chance called it a calypso crankshaft, you should have heard it!) I have owned a few, raced a few, showed a few, and loved them all. In 1963 my sister Gail, and her husband Billy bought a brand spanking new 63 Super Sport. White with red interior, 327.  I have always had a soft spot in my head for 63's. So, I am looking at a shopper magazine one Sunday, it was March 5, 2006 ,and there was an ad for a 1963 Chevrolet for sale for $500.

"Well, you know this can't be much, or it's already gone", but I called the number anyway.  "Yep, it's still sittin' out there, come look at it". So my wife JoAnne and I drove out in the country about 20 miles and took a look at my new money pit.

Well, these things are gettin' hard to find - and it IS a 2 door....It had a hole in the windshield, no seats, no floorboards, a 6 cylinder that had not run in years, two tires (one flat), and had centered a tree before it became a resting hulk.

The Flintstones would be right at home!

The Plush Interior

After I paid for the car, I consulted my good friend Mitch Foster, an excellent mechanic and a young guy who said he wants to learn about "old school" cars, (he has mastered todays stuff). He helped me find an engine for the car.  Since this is a 63, I naturally wanted a legendary 409.

Thru his connections at our towns leading independent auto parts store, Mitch knew a guy, who knew a guy, who had several of the famous "W" motors.  I was able to buy this one. The owner, a truly nice gentleman named Mark Yancey said he has seen it run, no smoke, no noise, no problems.  He decided that if I bought this from him, it would be an incentive to get back to work on his 58 Impala, so we made a deal. Since that day many years ago, Mark has restored a beautiful 1958 Impala, sporting a stroked 348 (to 406) with three two's and all the goodies.
